The rule of thirds: balancing food, water and breath

A balanced plate with vegetables, grains and fruit

An old guideline about portions that we now understand through satiety, digestion and steady energy throughout the day.

The classic guideline divides the stomach into three parts: one for food, one for drink and one left empty. It is an easy image to remember and surprisingly accurate in practice.

Why it works

Satiety signals reach the brain with a delay of roughly 15–20 minutes. When we eat to complete fullness, we have usually already eaten more than we needed.

By leaving room, digestion becomes easier, post-meal energy stays steadier and the feeling of heaviness disappears.

How to apply it today

No measuring required. A few small habits are enough:

  • Serve one portion and wait ten minutes before taking more.
  • Drink water before the meal, not at the end of it.
  • Stop when you feel light, not when you feel full.
  • Eat sitting down, screen-free, at least once a day.
